Ditch the chemicals – Make the switch to cleaner products

By Sagar Panchal | September 21, 2020

As you go down the men’s grooming aisle of Target to find your next hair styling product there are claims being made everywhere. These claims range from “high shine, matte finish, slick or mild hold”, there’s nearly a styling product for every hair type. Which one should you pick? Obviously you’d want a product that styles your hair with the least amount of work, but next time you decide to go with your hair product of choice, be sure to read all the ingredients.

From hair gel to pomade, to clays it takes a few tries to figure out what type of product works for you. It’s important however, to make sure what you’re applying onto your hair daily isn’t actually harming your hair. With a growing interest in cleaner grooming, we’ve broken down a few ingredients you should be aware of next time you make your purchase.

Chemicals To Be Aware Of

Sodium Lauryl sulfate (SLS) / Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)

This is a big ingredient that’s used in 90% of grooming products and it’s used as a surfactant (think foaming). Mainly used in shampoos and conditioners, we made sure that our new washes and conditioners don’t carry these. SLS and SLES are known to irritate the skin and are definitely some additives you would want to avoid.

Alcohol

Almost every hair product carries alcohol in it and it’s used as a preservative to keep your products lasting longer. Although not all alcohol used in products is bad for the hair typically the ones you want to worry about are ethanol, SD alcohol, SD alcohol 40, Alcohol Denat, Propanol, Propyl alcohol, and Isopropyl alcohol. These are known to dry your scalp out and cause breakage of the hair.

PEG’s or Polyethylene Glycol

These additives are used in a lot of hair care products used as a thickening agent. Typically they are known to strip the hair of its natural moisture which can cause dryness of the scalp, flakes, and itchiness.

Overall, there are plenty of good hair styling on the market but attention to detail is what may help your skin in the long run. Seeing the growing concern and desire for cleaner products, we’ve developed a completely natural pomade.

Our new clay pomade will be released mid-October. It is a beeswax-based styling clay that offers a mild hold with a matte finish without the use of the harsh chemicals that many other brands use. Perfect for those that want to style their hair and keep that minimal look. The best part about this product is that it only contains 4 ingredients. Our unique blend of beeswax, shea butter, clay, and coconut oil, allows for this pomade to help restore nutrients in your hair as you apply it.
